Program Information
The Varsity Group is designed for post-secondary athletes who have completed their season in AUS, OUA, or an equivalent varsity program, and who wish to continue training with the Legends during their off-season.
This group provides a high-performance training environment that allows varsity athletes to maintain and refine their competitive edge while away from their school programs. Training focuses on all Olympic events, with an emphasis on sustaining fitness, sharpening skills, and preparing for the upcoming varsity season.
Athletes in this group are expected to demonstrate leadership, professionalism, and commitment, serving as role models within the club. They will train alongside age group swimmers where appropriate, contributing their experience and benefiting from integration within the Legends’ performance culture. Participation in competitions may be tailored to individual goals, in consultation with the Head Coach, with opportunities available at local, provincial, or national levels.
Swimmers wishing to join the Varsity Group must apply through the St. John’s Legends Associate Swimmer Policy. Swimmers are ambassadors of the Legends program, representing the club both in Canada and internationally. They are expected to commit to training and competitions as outlined in their agreement with the Head Coach.
The Performance Stream is designed for the Legends’ highest-performing athletes. Swimmers in this stream have qualified for East Coast Championships and are pursuing, or have already achieved, National Standards such as the Ontario Junior International (OJI), Canadian Open (CO), Canadian Swimming Championships (CSC), and Junior/Senior Canadian Swimming Trials.
Athletes in this group are expected to lead by example, demonstrating commitment, discipline, and passion for the sport at the highest level. They represent the Legends at local, provincial, and national competitions, with priority meets identified by the Head Coach.
Training in this stream is highly structured and intensive, focusing on all Olympic events. Swimmers are guided by the Head Coach in a deeply planned training environment designed to support varsity selection, provincial team qualification, and progression toward national standards.
Commitment is monitored through attendance at training and competitions. As space in this group is limited, consistent accountability is expected. Athletes showing inconsistent commitment will work with the Head Coach to identify solutions; however, ongoing absences may result in removal from the group.
The Competitive Stream fosters the pursuit of excellence while supporting swimmers in the development of a successful swimming career. Training is designed to complement the abilities and skill development of all athletes and follows Swimming Canada’s Appropriate Athlete Development framework.
The objective of the pre-competitive program is to identify and inspire swimmers to participate in a competitive program. In these groups, we will teach and help swimmers to develop all 4 competitive strokes, develop competitive skills, and prepare the swimmer to make a successful transition into our competitive program.
The St. John’s Legends Summer Camp Program offers a fun, swim-focused camp experience for children aged 12 and under. Each camp runs in one-week blocks and includes two one-hour pool sessions each day, separated by engaging activities such as crafts, games, and outdoor play (weather permitting).
The program focuses on building and improving fundamental swimming skills in a supportive, active environment. While some competitive elements are introduced through racing skills like starts and turns, the emphasis is on overall skill development, confidence, and enjoyment of the water.
The camp is open to all swimmers — previous swim club experience is not required. To participate, swimmers must be able to complete one length (25m) each of Freestyle, Backstroke, and Breaststroke unassisted. Swimmers who are not currently registered with a Swimming Canada swim club will be registered with Swimming Canada for the purpose of attending the camp.
What to Bring:
Participants must bring their own swim gear, active wear (t-shirt, running shoes, shorts), lunch and snacks, sunscreen, and a filled water bottle.
Pathway to Legends:
Swimmers who complete a week of camp will be evaluated for placement in the Legends Swim Team for the upcoming season and will not be required to attend fall tryouts.
We welcome all transferring or new swimmers interested in joining the Legends to register for a tryout. Click below for information and to register for our next tryout sessions. Any prospective swimmer looking to join the St. John's Legends Swim Club must complete a tryout. This will allow our coaches to evaluate the swimmer's skills for appropriate placement within the clubs training groups.
